Deframing: photography and queer and decolonial perspectives

This workshop explores photographic practice (research, production, dissemination) through queer and decolonial perspectives.

The first day will be dedicated to theory and method, offering a historical and conceptual framework on the relationship between photography, power, and the representation of the Other. It will address the colonial and denormative uses of the image, as well as dissident photographic practices. Drawing on concrete examples such as the series Brigantinas (Sardinia, Italy, 2024) and Nego Fugido (Bahia, Brazil, 2022–2025), it will also examine the possibilities and limits of a postcolonial aesthetic epistemology in contemporary photographic practice.

The second day will be devoted to the analysis of participants’ ongoing photographic projects. This hands-on session will allow for a collective discussion of approaches, methodologies, and strategies of representation.

Participants are asked to share, during the workshop, an ongoing individual or collective project, or a project idea they would like to work on.
